In a June 6 email to Apex High School’s students and parents, retiring Apex High Principal Diann Kearney announced that the WCPSS School Board has appointed veteran principal John Williams to take the reins at AHS as interim principal, effective July 1, 2018.
“The 2018-2019 school year will begin a transformational time for our school as we pack up and move from the Level back to the Peak,” Dr. Kearney wrote. “Mr. Williams will bring the qualities parents suggested at the input session for the next principal. With a total of 36 years of experience in North Carolina public high schools, he strongly values the active role of parents and the community in schools. ”
Williams served as an an assistant principal and principal at Garner High for 12 years and principal of Middle Creek High School from 2002 through 2011. He also served on the Board of Directors for the Rotary Club, Arts Council, Chamber of Commerce and the Education Foundation.
He also served as Senior Director for High School Programs for WCPSS, during which time he consulted with the WCPSS facility division to design and renovate schools, such as the plan for Green Level High School.
“He grew up in Wake County and maintains an admiring affection for the Apex community as he has watched it grow so much from the sixties,” Dr. Kearney wrote. “He told me, ‘When I think about the richness embedded in community schools, Apex High School rises to the peak as an example of the best. Only the best can draw me out of retirement to serve as a principal again. … I will enjoy, support and promote the fullness of the storied traditions of strong academics, glittering arts and robust athletics ever present at Apex High. It will be a honor to work with the fabulous staff, excellent students and supportive parents.’”
